Hawthorne K. Dent founded Safeco in 1923 to help provide innovation to the insurance industry. However, back then, the insurance startup wasn’t known to the world as it is today but rather the General Insurance Company of America
Known as The General for short, the company was founded in Seattle, WA, and started gaining a positive reputation for its customer service and competitive pricing.
The Northeast had the majority of focus from the insurance industry at the time but Dent’s company continued to find opportunity throughout the West Coast and even managed to move towards the east over time.
Finally, in 1953, the company created a subsidiary known as Selective Auto and Fire Insurance Company of America (SAFECO) as a way to maintain a presence nationally against larger competitors.
The Safeco Insurance Company began using computers to automate its processes and it didn’t take long before the business entered the life insurance market as well as offering commercial coverage and mutual funds.
This success would birth a complete rebrand that would have the entire company renamed the Safeco Corporation. Following several more decades of success, Safeco was able to purchase American States Financial Corporation, in 1997, doubling its number of agents.
While this opportunity provided Safeco insurance companies the chance to establish a greater presence in the Midwest and East, along with increasing commercial lines of coverage, the company would end up facing a financial down period before a return to form in the early ‘00s.
In 2002, Safeco recommitted to competitive pricing, disciplined underwriting practices, and using technology for automation. A few years later, the company sold its investment and life division to hone in on property and casualty insurance.
These moves worked and righted the ship. Things went so well that Safeco caught the attention of Liberty Mutual Insurance and became a part of the entity in 2008.
Today, you’ll note the high praise of Safeco's customer service, widespread availability of agents, impressive product offerings, and financial strength.
With Safeco and Liberty Mutual combining forces, the carrier is now one of the leading insurers providing more than 90 years of experience for policyholders and continues to innovate for the future.

Does Safeco Cover Rental Cars?
Your coverage may include protection when renting a car, however, this varies from policy to policy and person to person. Furthermore, how you are protected will vary, depending on the coverage you’re enrolled in.
For example, if you have liability coverage and your rental is covered, but a tree falls on your rental while it’s parked, your personal car insurance policy won’t be of any help.
When determining whether to purchase rental car insurance, you’ll need to speak with your agent to understand how your policy protects you and the potential gaps in coverage you may need to protect against.
Additionally, if you have a Safeco car insurance policy, speaking to your credit card company is also important as many cards offer protection when renting a vehicle.
Does Safeco Cover Turo?
Just like a traditional rental transaction, Safeco may cover your Turo rental, but you need to check the details of your policy and potential coverage gaps beforehand. Speaking with an agent before using Turo is critical because some policies outright exclude coverage when using the carsharing service.
