Totaled means the car is worth less to repair than to replace
The company compares the repair estimate with the car’s actual cash value, what it was worth the moment before the crash or the storm. When repair no longer makes sense under the policy and the state’s rule, they total it and pay that value, minus your deductible. They do not pay what you owe the bank, and they do not pay what you paid for the car.

Collision or comprehensive, then actual cash value
A crash you cause, or a crash with another car, is collision if you carry it. Hail, flood, theft, or a fire is comprehensive. Liability does not repair your car at all. Collision and comprehensive. “Full coverage” only means you bought both plus liability. Liability versus full coverage.
Actual cash value is market value before the loss, not a new car. The deductible comes off that figure. If you disagree with the valuation, the practical step is comparable cars for sale in your area, the mileage, and the options, sent to the adjuster. That is a dispute about the number. The loan can outlive the check
If you owe more than the actual cash value, the leftover stays on the loan unless you have gap coverage. Gap is not included just because you have comprehensive and collision. Missouri gap and Colorado gap. The title that comes back is often branded salvage or rebuilt, and that brand follows the car. Rules differ by state. Do not plan to resell it as a clean title.
