A cancel date with nothing behind it is a lapse.
Colorado’s financial-responsibility floor is $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $15,000 for property damage. That pays other people. Cancel the old policy only after the new one is bound, with the dates overlapping. A day in between is a lapse. This is educational, not DMV or legal advice. Unearned premium may come back. A mid-term cancel can also involve earned premium, a minimum earned premium, or short-rate math. The cancel clause says which.
