Lewisville History

The history of Lewisville dates back to the 1840s when the Republic of Texas gave a grant to the Texas Emigration and Land Company that would allow 600 families to settle in present-day Denton County. By 1846, the settling families had arrived, and Denton County was founded. An incorporation election was held in 1925, which established Lewisville as an official city. At this time, the city’s population was 850 people.

The City of Lewisville continued to thrive, and by 1950, the population had grown to 1,500 people. In 1960, the Lewisville Lake Dam was constructed and U.S. 77, which is now IH-35E, was moved further west to serve as the main route between Dallas and Denton. In the 1970s and 1980s, the population of Lewisville rapidly increased and the city began to flourish.

By the 1990s, Lewisville’s population was 46,500 people, and the city had grown in residential and employment sectors as well. Today, the population of Lewisville is approximately 100,000 people, and the city is a major thriving community in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
