Car Insurance Cost in Texas: What Actually Drives Your Premium

Texas auto · What changes the price

There is no Texas average that is your premium

The company prices your household: who drives, where the car sleeps, what the car costs to fix, and which coverages you bought. A statewide average is someone else’s blend. It is not a quote.

The floor is not the price. Texas requires at least $30,000 per person and $60,000 per crash for injuries, and $25,000 for property damage. That is the legal minimum from the TDI auto guide. It does not repair your car.

The pieces that move the bill

Liability pays other people. It moves with your record, your miles, and your ZIP, because those predict injury claims. Collision and comprehensive pay for your car, up to actual cash value minus the deductible, so a vehicle that is expensive to repair or easy to steal costs more on those two even when liability looks ordinary. Hail is comprehensive. A crash is collision. Raising a deductible lowers the premium and raises what you pay after a claim. There is no fixed percent. Compare two quotes.

Where the state allows it, a credit-based insurance score can change the price without a ticket. Garaging address matters more than the city name on your license. A car kept in a hail-heavy ZIP is not the same risk as the same car an hour away.

How to shop without shrinking the wrong part

Hold the liability limits and the deductibles still, then compare companies. Dropping collision on a financed car is not a discount. It is a smaller policy, and the lender will usually reject it. “Full coverage” only means liability plus collision plus comprehensive. It is not a limit.
