What to Expect Living in Texas: Lifestyle, Climate, and Regions

Texas · The move changes the contract, not just the weather

Living in Texas does not come with one insurance price. The perils are not the same in every ZIP.

Houston, Dallas–Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio, and a small town are not one housing market and not one hail map. This page will not invent a cost of living. What does transfer on the day you move is the policy. The car needs Texas liability before you drive it. The house, if a lender is involved, needs a dwelling limit based on rebuild cost, not the price you paid.

Three exclusions people meet in the first year. The auto floor is 30/60/25. It pays other people. TexasSure checks that a registered vehicle is insured. Collision and comprehensive are separate, and “full coverage” does not include rental, gap, or uninsured motorist unless they are listed. On the house, a hail deductible is often a percent of Coverage A. On a $450,000 dwelling, 2 percent is $9,000. That is an example, not a quote. Flood is not a homeowners peril. TDI notes that in Harvey, more than half of the flooded homes were outside high-risk zones. Coastal wind and hail can be a TWIA policy. TWIA is not flood. The state does not require homeowners insurance the way it requires auto liability. The lender does.

Getting the dates to overlap when you arrive: moving to Texas. The policies: Texas homeowners, whether the house policy is required, Texas auto, when auto liability became mandatory, insurance and registration, and what the car policy covers. Flood, separately: flood insurance in Texas.

Bind the Texas auto policy before the out-of-state one ends, and set Coverage A from a rebuild number after you close.
