Colorado Home · Garage Door · Hail, Wind, and Accidents
Homeowners insurance pays for a garage door a covered event breaks. It does not pay because the door wore out. An attached door is part of the dwelling. Hail, wind, a falling limb, vandalism, and a vehicle impact are the usual claim paths, after the deductible. A tired spring, a dead opener, and panels that rusted in place are maintenance. Educational only, not a claim guarantee.
Not a claim promise. Open peril versus named peril, and replacement cost versus actual cash value, change the check. We do not market fake fixed-percent savings. Dwelling context: dwelling coverage in Colorado.
1. What part of the policy the door sits on
If the garage is attached, the door is dwelling coverage, the same bucket as the roof and siding. If the garage is detached, the door is usually other structures, which is often a smaller limit. The opener motor is equipment. A storm that destroys the door can include the opener when the opener is wrecked by that same event. An opener that simply quits on a quiet Tuesday is mechanical breakdown, which a standard homeowners form does not treat as a covered peril.
| What happened | Typical treatment |
|---|---|
| Hail or wind dents panels, breaks windows, or bends the track | Often covered with the dwelling or other structures, after the wind or hail deductible |
| A car hits the door | The building claim may apply. The driver’s auto policy is often the first place the impact itself is handled, depending on who was driving |
| A limb, vandalism, or fire | Common covered causes, after the deductible that applies to that peril |
| Springs, rollers, or the opener fail from age | Maintenance. Not a claim |
2. Cosmetic dents versus a door that will not close
Hail can leave dents that do not stop the door from working. Some payments follow whether the panel is functionally damaged or only marked, and actual cash value subtracts for an old door even when the peril is covered. Replacement cost aims at today’s price of a comparable door, up to the limit. Photograph every panel before anyone “pops” dents. Matching a new door to old siding is not automatic. Riders that change exterior settlement are separate: Colorado homeowners riders.
If your own car hits your own door, do not assume one policy pays both. Collision on the auto policy is what repairs the car if you carry it. The door is the house. A neighbor who hits the door brings their liability into the conversation. Tell the agent both facts.
FAQ
Does homeowners insurance cover a garage door in Colorado?
When hail, wind, impact, vandalism, or another covered cause damages it, usually yes, after the deductible. Wear and a failed opener are not covered causes.
Are hail dents enough?
They can be, especially when panels, windows, or tracks are damaged. Light cosmetic marking on an old door may not clear the deductible or the settlement rules. Photograph first and compare the estimate to the deductible.
Is a detached garage the same limit as the house?
Usually no. Detached structures sit on other-structures coverage, often a percentage of the dwelling limit. The declarations page states it.
Will insurance replace the opener?
If a covered event destroyed it along with the door, it can be part of that claim. If the motor died of age, that is a repair you pay for.
