Missouri auto · Why the car changes the price
What makes a car cheaper or costlier to insure in Missouri
The car changes the price only on the parts of the policy that pay for the car. Liability pays other people. It barely cares whether you drive a paid-off sedan or a new truck. Collision and comprehensive pay to fix or replace your vehicle, so repair cost, theft, and hail sit on those two coverages.
The policy pieces: Missouri auto, collision, and comprehensive.
Liability is about you. Physical damage is about the car.
Missouri’s liability floor has long been described as $25,000 per person and $50,000 per crash for injuries, and $25,000 for property damage, with uninsured-motorist bodily injury at the same 25/50. Confirm the current minimum before you buy. That floor does not repair your car. “Full coverage” is just the everyday name for liability plus collision plus comprehensive. A cheap liability-only policy on a new financed car is not full coverage, and the lender will usually require the other two. Liability and uninsured motorist.
Why one model costs more to fix
Collision pays when you hit something, minus your deductible, up to the car’s actual cash value. Actual cash value is what the car was worth the moment before the crash, not what you paid and not what you still owe. A car with aluminum panels, a sensor-packed bumper, or a windshield the shop has to recalibrate costs more per claim, so collision and comprehensive run higher even when the sticker price looks ordinary.
Comprehensive is everything that is not a crash: theft, vandalism, a deer, hail. A car thieves like, parked on a street in a metro ZIP, pushes comprehensive up. Missouri hail is a comprehensive claim, not a homeowners claim and not collision. Hail damage in Missouri.
If you still owe more than the car is worth, collision and comprehensive stop at actual cash value. The leftover loan is what gap insurance is for. It is not part of the auto policy unless you add it. Rental reimbursement pays a car while yours is in the shop on a covered claim. It does not change the deductible.
How to compare without a fake ranking
Quote the cars you would actually buy, on the same liability limits, the same collision and comprehensive deductibles, and the same garaging ZIP. Then add the premium to the payment. A lower sticker price with a high comprehensive premium can cost more per year than the car next to it. Tell the agent if the truck is for work or for commuting. Commercial use is a different policy.
