Overlap the dates, or the cancel is a lapse
Cancel a Tennessee auto policy only after the replacement is already bound. The new effective date has to meet or beat the old cancel date. A gap is a lapse. The next application asks about it, and a lender on a financed car can place its own coverage. That force-placed policy protects the lender’s interest in the vehicle. It is not the liability, collision, and comprehensive you shopped.
Changing agents inside the same company is not a cancellation. Dropping the policy because the car is in the garage still needs a plan for registration, and “non-operational” rules are not the same in every state. Being non-renewed by the carrier is their decision. Your cancel is yours. Do not confuse the two when you tell the next company why the old policy ended.
Tennessee products: Tennessee insurance. The same steps in Missouri: cancel auto insurance in Missouri. Proof at the counter: insurance to register a car. A car you are not driving, which is a different question: non-operational, in Texas. When the company ends it: can an insurer drop you. Keeping the company and changing the agent: change the agent, keep the company.
