Government-Mandated Auto Insurance Discount for Seniors

Auto · Mature-driver courses

A senior discount is a credit you have to ask for

In some states the law tells admitted insurers to offer a premium reduction after an older driver finishes an approved safety course and turns in the certificate. In other states the credit is only whatever that company filed. Either way it is not automatic, and there is no honest single percent. The renewal shows the credit or it does not.

The certificate is the trigger. Finishing a course the state or the company does not recognize does not create the discount. Ask which course counts before you pay for it.

What the credit does and does not change

It reduces premium on the lines the filing names, often liability, sometimes the whole policy, for a period that expires. It does not raise your liability limits, and it does not add collision or comprehensive. When the certificate expires, the credit comes off at renewal unless you take the course again. Age alone, without the certificate, is not the discount. Some companies also rate older drivers differently for claims reasons. That rating is not this credit.
