Comprehensive Car Insurance in Colorado

Comprehensive pays for your car when it was not a crash

On the form it is often called “other than collision.” It pays to repair or replace your vehicle after hail, theft, vandalism, fire, flood, a falling object, broken glass, or an animal. It does not pay the other driver. That is liability. It does not pay a crash with another car or a pole. That is collision.

It stops at actual cash value. If the car is totaled, comprehensive pays what it was worth the moment before the loss, minus your deductible. It does not pay the loan balance.

The product page: Colorado comprehensive. Next to it: collision and full coverage, which is just the everyday name for liability plus those two.

Hail is the Colorado claim

A Front Range or plains storm that dents the hood and cracks the glass is comprehensive, even if the car was parked and you were not in it. Collision would apply only if you then hit something. The deductible is the one printed on comprehensive, not the collision deductible. A higher comprehensive deductible lowers the premium and raises the check you write after the next storm. There is no fixed percent saved. Compare two quotes.

A lender or a lease almost always requires comprehensive and collision together. Dropping comprehensive on a paid-off car is a choice. Dropping it on a financed car usually breaks the contract. Liability is still required to drive. Staying legal in Colorado. The menu of options: Colorado car insurance options.

What it still leaves out

Mechanical breakdown is not comprehensive. A worn transmission is maintenance. Flood water that reaches the car can be comprehensive. Flood water in the house is not this policy at all. A rental car while yours is in the shop is a separate endorsement. Gap coverage, if you owe more than the car is worth, is also separate. Comprehensive does not include either one unless the declarations page says so.
