How to Cancel Car Insurance in Colorado

Colorado · Bind the next policy before you cancel

A cancel date with nothing behind it is a lapse.

Colorado’s financial-responsibility floor is $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $15,000 for property damage. That pays other people. Cancel the old policy only after the new one is bound, with the dates overlapping. A day in between is a lapse. This is educational, not DMV or legal advice. Notice periods and refund math are in the contract. This page does not invent them.

The lender’s policy is not yours. On a financed or leased car, the contract usually requires collision and comprehensive, with the lender named as loss payee, until the loan is done. Drop that and the lender can buy force-placed insurance. It protects the lender’s interest in the vehicle. It often skips liability, and the bill still lands on you. Put the lender’s name on the new declarations the day coverage starts. If an SR-22 is in force, the filing drops with the policy unless the new carrier files one. How that filing works: Colorado SR-22.

Unearned premium may come back. A mid-term cancel can also involve earned premium, a minimum earned premium, or short-rate math. The cancel clause says which. Changing the agent while you keep the company is often a broker-of-record letter, not a cancel: change the agent, keep the company. A company ending you is different: cancellation versus nonrenewal. A stored car may still need comprehensive: the Texas version of that question is non-operational coverage. Registration proof: insurance and registration. The same steps in Texas: canceling a Texas auto policy.

Overlap the dates, then cancel, and keep the ID card that matches the new effective date. Ask an agent or get an auto quote.
