Teenage Road Safety for Families in Texas

Texas · List the driver, then set the limit

Adding a teenager usually raises the auto premium because the rating uses that driver. The liability limit is still the household’s cap when they cause a crash. This page will not invent graduated-license hours or a teen discount.

Texas financial responsibility is $30,000 bodily injury per person, $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 property damage. A new driver does not get a different floor. An $80,000 judgment against a $30,000 per-person limit leaves the rest on the household. That is example math. List the teen if they live with you and drive the cars. Leaving them off does not keep the premium down in a claim. A named-driver exclusion, where the form allows one, means that person is not covered when they drive. It is not a quiet way to insure them for less. License phases, passenger rules, and curfews are on the Texas Department of Public Safety site. They are not printed here.

A good-student credit and a telematics program are carrier rules, not statutes. Telematics can raise or lower the price. It does not add liability. Personal injury protection, if you kept it, pays the teen’s medical bills as an occupant. It is not the liability that pays the other car. When they drive someone else’s vehicle, the car’s policy often responds first and the household policy may sit above it. Forms differ. Collision and comprehensive still use their own deductibles if you bought them. Shopping a quote after you add the driver does not itself raise the rate. A lapse does.

The policy they are added to: car insurance in Texas and what it covers. The household picture: home and auto together. Changing companies after the premium moves: how to switch. License rules: Texas DPS driver license. The state hub: Texas insurance.

Add the teen before they drive, and decide whether 30/60/25 is enough for a judgment. Ask an agent or get an auto quote.
