Texas · Hail
Hail on the roof and hail on the car are two claims
Homeowners insurance can pay for hail on the house if wind and hail are covered perils on your form. Auto insurance pays for hail on the car only if you have comprehensive. Collision does not apply, because nobody crashed. Liability does not apply, because nobody else was hurt. One storm can produce both claims, and they do not share a deductible.
Texas homeowners and Texas car insurance. Season timing: hail season. Collision versus comprehensive: the difference.
What the house check depends on
Replacement cost pays to repair the roof without subtracting age only when the form says so and the dwelling is insured high enough, often about 80 percent of rebuild cost. An actual-cash-value roof pays depreciated value, so an old roof can be denied in practice even when hail is a covered peril, because the depreciated number is under the deductible. Cosmetic-only damage is sometimes limited by endorsement. Read that line before you assume every dent is a new roof.
Raising the hail deductible lowers the premium and raises the check you write. There is no fixed percent saved. Home deductibles and auto deductibles.
