What a Texas insurance agency actually does
The agency does not pay the claim. The insurance company does. What changes is who can quote you, and who is on the phone when the company asks for the roof photos. An independent agency is appointed with more than one company. A captive agent sells one brand. Buying on a carrier’s website is you, alone, on that one company’s form.

Three ways the policy gets written
An independent agency can put the house at one company and the cars at another when that is the better fit. A captive agent knows one product deeply and cannot move you when that company non-renews the roof. A direct site is fast when the risk is simple: one driver, a newer roof, no claims. It is a poor place to discover that flood is excluded or that the hail deductible is 2 percent of the dwelling limit. Two percent of a $400,000 Coverage A is $8,000. Example only.

What to hold constant while you shop
Ask every market for the same auto liability, the same collision and comprehensive deductibles, and the same home dwelling limit. Texas auto liability is commonly 30/60/25 at the floor. Confirm it. “Full coverage” only means liability plus collision plus comprehensive. On the house, Coverage A is rebuild cost, not the sale price and not the county tax value. Many HO-3 forms pay replacement cost on the dwelling only if it is insured to about 80 percent of rebuild cost. How Texas home insurance is put together.
Products an agency can place side by side: Texas auto, Texas homeowners, landlord, and umbrella. An umbrella pays only after the auto and home liability limits are used up. Carriers commonly want about 250/500 on the cars and $300,000 of home liability first. That is an underwriting rule, not a law.
At claim time
The adjuster still works for the company. A local agency can tell you which deductible applies, what photos the company is asking for, and when a denial is about an exclusion rather than a missing form. It cannot promise the claim will be paid. Claim notes: Texas auto claims.
